MISSISSIPPI DOVE SEASON 2026: TIPS FOR OLD-TIMERS AND FIRST-TIMERS ALIKE
Dove season opener is almost here - September 5 for the South Zone, shooting hours noon to sunset, 15-bird limit. Whether you've been doing this since before you could legally drive, or this is your very first field, here's everything you need to know (and everything we've got in stock to help you get there).
IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST DOVE SEASON
Get there early - doves start flying at daylight, so don't roll up at noon expecting the sky to be full. Bring a good seat: a dove bucket with a swivel top is the classic setup, letting you spin and track birds without giving away your position. Some folks prefer a hunting vest with a built-in game bag instead - either works, it's about what's comfortable for a long sit.
One tip that trips up rookies: figure out where you're going to stash your doves once you drop them. Nothing ruins a good hunt faster than ants getting to your birds before you can clean them. A dove bucket does double duty here too.
Mojo doves (the spinning-wing decoys) are hugely popular right now and can make a real difference in pulling birds into range.
Your first-timer starter kit: shotgun, shells, dove bucket with swivel seat. Add a vest and some camo if you want to level up from there.
REMINDERS FOR THE VETERANS
You know the drill, but it's worth saying every year: make sure your gun has a plug in it. Mississippi law caps you at three shells total in the gun at once for migratory bird hunting - no exceptions. And double check your license is current before you head out. Easy things to forget in the excitement of opener.
